Meta Tags
Today, most people will tell you that meta tags are not that important, which is not true. Even though meta tags are not being used that much by search engines as they were before, they still play an important part in search engine ranking. The two most important meta tags are the “description” and the “keywords” tags. They should always be placed above any other meta tags. The “description” meta tag is a small description of the content of the web page in question. It should be no more than 25-30 words, otherwise it will be ignored by the search engine. You will get best results with descriptions, which include the most important keywords in the web page in question. However, don’t forget that the text in the description must be human readable and not automatically generated. This text is also used as a snippet in the search engine results – an attractive text will get more traffic than a generated one. The “keywords” meta tag is a combination of all the keywords, included in the content of the web page. Think carefully which keywords you choose and don’t overcrowd this meta tag. Also, using the same keyword in different variations will most likely lead to negative results.Online Directories
The two most important online directories are DMOZ and Yahoo. And while submitting your site in an online directory will not bring a lot of traffic, it will be very good for your Google ranking. Why is that? In 90% the user will use a search engine to find a site, instead of browsing an online directory, which in most cases is in alphabetical order. However, when your site is submitted there, it will be crawled very fast by a search engine bot. This is because the online directories are administrated by people, and a listing there is considered important and valuable. Another bonus of having your site listed in an online directory is that it would be as if they were linking back to your site. This link is considered very valuable by the search engines, since the online directory has a high page rank.
