.IL – historical background
Launched on 24 October 1985, .IL was one of the first country-code extensions to hit the then-virgin domain registration market. Only two ccTLDs had been introduced before .IL, namely.US and .UK.
The .IL domain extension is administered by the Israel Internet Association – a not-for-profit membership organization dedicated to promoting the use of the Internet for research, communication and collaboration purposes.
The DNS root server is hosted by NIC-ISRAEL, which also manages the Israeli Internet Exchange (IIX).
Apart from .CO.IL domains, which are meant for commercial entities, registrants can also register .ORG.IL domain names, which are intended for non-profit organizations.
Since December 2010, the registration of third-level domain names containing Hebrew characters (e.g. איגוד-האינטרנט.org.il) has been possible. So far, around 250,000 domain names have been registered under .IL.
Currently, Israel is in the process of obtaining the internationalized country-code Top-Level Domain ..ישראל.
Why offer/register .IL domains?
Israel is considered the most advanced economy in Southwest Asia and the Middle East.
Its high-tech industry and rapid economic development are fostered by the high-quality higher education and the highly motivated population.
Israel is ranked 24th in the World Economic Forum’s Global Competitiveness Report and 52nd in the World Bank’s Ease of Doing Business index.
It has the second-largest number of startup companies in the world (after the United States) and the third-largest number of NASDAQ-listed companies (after the United States and China).
Israel’s thriving economy creates a favorable business investment environment, which makes the country a substantial potential market for digital services.
At the same time, Israel has its own very specific culture, which has also been reflected online.
Most Israel-based startup businesses wishing to create a strong online presence have shown a preference for the .IL extension due to the fact that it can underline their identity.
Local individuals are also more prone to preferring .IL-ending sites over regular .COM-equipped pages. Search engines, in turn, give priority to local web portals.
.IL domain registration requirements
.IL domain names are open for registration by anyone for a period of 1 year.
A .CO.IL domain can contain 3-63 alphanumeric characters and a hyphen (except at the beginning and at the end).
Hebrew characters can be used at the third level (e.g. איגוד-האינטרנט.org.il).
Once a domain name containing Hebrew characters has been typed into the address bar of an IDN-compatible browser (most modern browsers are), it will be automatically translated into a ‘regular’ domain comprising Latin characters so that the DNS can recognize it.
How will the new .CO.IL cost affect your pricing?
The .CO.IL price reduction will allow you to offer attractive domain names to customers from around the world at a really competitive price.
Due to the substantial price drop, we have updated the prices set by both our new and existing partners to the new retail levels.
To finetune your retail price to your pricing strategy, go to your Reseller Control Panel and edit the current default retail price.
How to enable .CO.IL on your store?
