Domain reseller strategies for 2026 and beyond

We’ve been in the domain reseller business for more than 20 years.

During that time, we’ve seen trends come and go, pricing models change, and new TLDs rise in popularity.

In this guide, we’ll explore the latest market trends and share practical tips to help domain resellers grow their business in 2026 and beyond.

Domain registration trends in 2026

Domain registrations continue to rise year after year as more businesses and individuals bring their ideas to the web.

At the same time, bad actors continue to register domains for phishing campaigns and other malicious activities, prompting registries and registrars to strengthen security measures.

One of the biggest trends in recent years has been the rise of the .AI TLD.

Demand has grown rapidly alongside the popularity of vibe coding projects, AI agents, and AI-powered services.

Other technology-focused TLDs gaining popularity include .IO and .TECH.

However, their overall volume remains relatively small compared to .COM.

Over the past five years, .COM has accounted for around 70% of all domain registrations through our platform. Together with .NET and .ORG, these three TLDs make up about 80% of all registrations.

Considering these trends, now is a great time to be a domain reseller.

Demand remains strong for both traditional TLDs, which generate revenue through volume, and niche TLDs, which often offer higher margins despite lower sales numbers.

Understanding where demand is growing is only the first step. The next challenge is deciding which TLDs to offer and how to present them to customers.

How to compose a profitable TLD portfolio

We currently offer more than 160 TLDs through our Free Reseller program, placing us among the providers with the largest domain selections available.

The most common approach is simple: offer every TLD available.

This gives customers plenty of options when looking for an available domain.

If you’re just getting started or domains are not your primary focus, this is often the best approach.

However, more choice doesn’t always lead to more sales. Too many options can overwhelm customers and make decision-making harder.

That’s why many resellers choose to offer a smaller selection of TLDs, focusing on the extensions most relevant to their customers.

A smaller, more focused domain portfolio can simplify the buying process and improve conversions.

However, we generally recommend offering at least 10 popular TLDs so customers still have alternatives when their first choice isn’t available.

You can also create a niche store focused on one or two TLDs, but this works best when supported by a clear marketing strategy and target audience.

Once you’ve decided which TLDs to offer, the next step is determining how to price them.

How to price TLDs for maximum profit

Pricing is one of the most powerful tools available to domain resellers. The right pricing strategy can improve both conversion rates and long-term profitability.

By default, we include a modest margin for every TLD, but you can customize pricing to align with your business goals.

We have divided our TLDs into three categories:

  • Generic TLDs;
  • Country-Code TLDs (ccTLDs);
  • New TLDs.

Each category attracts different buyers and benefits from a different pricing strategy.

Generic TLD pricing

Generic TLDs are the most popular and widely used domain extensions.

This category includes traditional extensions such as .COM, .NET, and .ORG, alongside newer additions like .TECH, .STORE, and .WEBSITE.

While newer extensions continue to grow, traditional TLDs still dominate registrations.

As mentioned earlier, .COM, .NET, and .ORG account for roughly 80% of all registrations through our platform.

One important consideration is that .COM pricing continues to rise. Registry costs have increased steadily over the years, yet demand remains largely unaffected.

This presents an opportunity for resellers.

We suggest experimenting with slightly higher pricing on .COM, .NET, and .ORG domains. These extensions have strong brand recognition and consistent demand.

That said, avoid excessive markups. Profitability in this category comes primarily from volume rather than high margins.

Top-performing Generic TLDs over the past five years:

  • .com
  • .org
  • .net
  • .info
  • .online

Country-Code TLD pricing

While Generic TLDs dominate globally, Country-Code TLDs offer something equally valuable: local trust and geographic relevance.

Businesses often choose ccTLDs because they signal a local presence and help establish credibility within a specific market.

However, their audience is naturally more limited than that of Generic TLDs.

Some ccTLD registries also place eligibility requirements, further reducing the potential customer base.

For these reasons, competitive pricing generally works best.

Higher margins can be effective if you specialize in specific geographic markets and build your marketing around local services.

  • .co.uk
  • .us
  • .ca
  • .com.au
  • .ie
  • .co

New TLD pricing

New TLDs represent a different opportunity altogether.

Unlike Generic TLDs, which thrive on volume, New TLDs are a top choice for niche customers looking for highly relevant domain names.

Because these extensions are industry-specific, customers are often willing to pay a premium for the right name.

Another advantage is availability. Many desirable names that are unavailable under .COM can still be registered under newer extensions.

As a result, modest price increases often work well for this category.

However, there are several factors to keep in mind.

Many New TLDs are frequently sold at discounted first-year prices. While this can attract customers, it’s important to make them aware of the higher renewal costs.

Additionally, registry pricing tends to increase over time, so it’s important to monitor pricing changes and market trends.

For example, .AI currently enjoys exceptional demand, giving resellers greater flexibility in pricing.

  • .space
  • .academy
  • .host
  • .world
  • .solutions
  • .xyz
  • .site
  • .services

Choosing the right TLDs and pricing them effectively is only part of the equation.

Customers still need to discover your offers and understand their value.

How to position domain offers on your website

The ideal positioning of your domain offers within your store depends on your business model.

If domains are your main product, place your domain search form prominently on your homepage so visitors see it right away. List your main advantage or selling point near the domain search form.

If domains are a secondary product, present them as an add-on to your main service while keeping them visible throughout your website.

Consider integrating domain-related offers directly into your web hosting service pages so customers naturally view them as part of a complete solution.

You should also maintain a dedicated domain page that highlights:

  • Available TLDs;
  • Pricing;
  • Promotions;
  • Competitive advantages.

For larger domain portfolios, individual landing pages for specific TLDs can also be effective.

Just ensure each page contains unique and useful content that provides genuine value to visitors.

A strong sales process doesn’t end when a customer completes a registration.

How to profit from domain renewals

The profit from a single domain registration is usually small. Since domains are renewed only once a year, the recurring revenue is limited as well.

Many providers attract customers with heavily discounted first-year prices. However, renewal costs often increase significantly, leading to lower customer retention.

Our reseller platform takes a different approach.

For most TLDs, registration and renewal pricing remain consistent unless a specific promotion applies.

This allows you to market transparent pricing and build trust with customers.

Trusted providers tend to generate more renewals, referrals, and cross-sales of related services such as web hosting, SSL certificates, and Whois Privacy Protection.

Bundles vs. standalone domain registrations

For most resellers, bundling domains with another services (WHOIS protection, an SSL certificate, or a hosting service) creates greater revenue opportunities than selling standalone registrations.

Hosting is typically the strongest bundle option because customers prefer managing their website and domain from a single provider.

Through our Free Reseller Program, you can even offer selected domains free of charge when customers maintain an active web hosting account.

When promoting your services, always highlight the free domain and hosting bundle.

However, standalone registrations still have an important role.

Some customers prefer to keep domain registration separate from hosting, and our Domain Manager plan is designed specifically for this audience.

To increase value, each domain includes access to email mailboxes and SMTP services, making the offering more attractive than a basic registration alone.

Both options have their place and allow you to tailor your strategy to different customer audiences.

Existing customers will likely look for a second domain

Getting new customers is often the most expensive aspect of growing a reseller business.

That’s why successful resellers focus heavily on maximizing their profit from existing customers.

A simple strategy is to identify customers who have been with you for more than a year and own only a single domain.

These customers may benefit from registering additional TLD variations of their primary brand name.

Doing so helps protect their brand, prevents customer confusion, and reduces the risk of cybersquatting.

We recently came across a hosting company and a garlic delivery service using the same name. Customers searching for one often ended up finding the other.

So encourage your customers to register additional TLDs to help protect their brand and avoid confusion.

The more you know about TLDs, the better you can sell them

The better you understand the TLDs you offer, the easier it will be to recommend the right one to your customers.

When dealing with 160+ TLDs, that’s a lot of information to keep track of.

To make things easier, we’ve divided our TLD offerings into three groups. This helps you better understand the strengths of each category and recommend the right TLD to the right customer.

For example, if a customer wants to start a business, a New TLD can be a great choice depending on the industry:

Best Domain Extensions by Industry

Industry Suggested TLDs
SaaS .io, .software, .tech, .technology, .digital, .systems, .solutions, .codes
Agencies .agency, .marketing, .consulting, .training, .team
Education .academy, .education, .school
Real Estate .estate, .properties, .land, .broker, .rentals
E-commerce .store, .shop, .sale, .deals, .bargains, .forsale, .cheap, .company, .business, .services, .delivery, .boutique, .coupons

These TLDs often have more domain names available and allow businesses to create a more distinctive online identity.

For businesses that serve a local market, such as plumbers, electricians, contractors, or mechanics, a Country-Code TLD can be an excellent choice.

Make good use of TLD promotions

Even with strong pricing and positioning, promotions remain one of the most effective tools for driving domain sales.

Promotional campaigns help attract two key customer groups:

  • Buyers actively searching for deals;
  • Customers who prioritize price over TLD preference.

We’ve consistently observed increased activity during promotional periods, particularly around major shopping events such as Black Friday.

So, if promo pricing is available, feature it prominently throughout your website, especially near domain search forms.

Be transparent about promotion terms and clearly communicate that discounted pricing usually applies only to the first year of registration.

This helps avoid misunderstandings and builds trust with customers.

Our domain reseller program regularly includes promotional TLD offers, giving you additional opportunities to attract customers and strengthen your domain portfolio.

As the domain market continues to evolve – the basics of successful domain reselling remain the same.

Offer the right mix of TLDs, use a smart pricing strategy, focus on customer retention, and look for opportunities to bundle domains with other services.

Most importantly, treat domain registrations as the start of a long-term customer relationship, not a one-time sale.

Customers who trust you with their domains are more likely to purchase hosting, email services, security products, and additional domains in the future.

As demand for online presence continues to grow, resellers who understand their products and put customers first will be best positioned for long-term success.
