.AT domain names can now be transferred over

.AT is one of those country-code extensions that go far beyond their initial purpose to represent a country due to their lucky coincidence with a popular word.

The official domain extension for Austria hopped over the Alpine country’s boundary and became one of the most preferred TLDs for domain hacks such as meetme.AT or findth.AT.

Starting from today, you and your customers will be able to also transfer .AT domains from other registrars over to us and vice versa.

.AT domains – some key highlights

When launched in 1988, .AT was delegated to the University of Vienna, which served as a registry for a period of 10 years, imposing local ‘academic’ restrictions on the registration rules.

In 1998, Nic.AT took over the administration of .AT domains and greatly liberalized the eligibility rules by eliminating the requirement for an Austrian citizenship.

This had an immediate impact on the number of .AT registrations, as the online community started recognizing .AT as a great medium for snapping catchy domains whose .COM and .NET alternatives had already been taken.

As a result, out of the more than 1.2 million active .AT domain names today, about ⅓ are registered by entities outside Austria.

How to transfer .AT domains?

You’ve been able to offer your customers .AT registrations and take part in this global .AT trend for a few years now.

As a member of our reseller hosting program, you can further tap into the ever-expanding global .AT market by allowing your customers to also transfer .AT domain names over to us.

This way, you will have better chances of keeping them with you for a longer period of time.

The transfer procedure is standard and requires an EPP code to go through.

Once your customer initiates a transfer, they will receive an email from the Nic.AT registry asking for a confirmation of the transfer request. If the customer does not confirm the transfer within 21 days, the transfer will fail.

NOTE: Due to registry limitations, owners of transferred .AT domain names retain only the remaining registration time and there is no automatic extension of the registration period.
